Gilgamesh is one of the oldest characters in Western Literature being featured in a series of stories from ancient Sumer. Gilgamesh draws on the cuneiform story of the Epic of Gilgamesh. The first movement tells of his tyranny and how the gods create Enkidu to be his companion and after Enkidu is civilized, he and Gilgamesh go on many adventures which in the end results in Enkidu’s death. The second movement tells the story of Gilgamesh’s journey to Utnapishtim in search of the lone survivor of the great flood who has the secret of immortality. The third movement tells of Gilgamesh’s quest for immortality.
