Symphony No. 6 (2023)

Jeffrey A. Young
Symphony No. 6 (2023)

I. Allegro
II. Andante
III. Fast
IV. Allegro

The opening of this symphony is evocative of dance music from the American West particularly as it is heard in the ballets of Aaron Copland. This piece, unlike symphonies of the Classical Era, demonstrates more than one affectation or emotional state. These varied emotional states dictate the form of the work as opposed to a formula like Sonata Allegro form. The second movement opens with a saxophone quartet playing a chorale that soon deteriorates into a sort of Danse Macabre and this juxtaposition continue through the remainder of the movement. The third movement, as is typical of the standard symphony is a triple meter, sort of Scherzo movement. The fourth movement is inspired by my playing with a local rock and roll band.
