Symphony No. 5 (2023)

Jeffrey A. Young
Symphony No. 5 (2023)

I. Maestoso
II. Andante
III. Scherzo
IV. Solemn
V. Fiercely

This is a symphony in five movements arranged: fast-slow-scherzo-slow-fast. The first movement is alternating militaristic and primitive. The second movement is a funeral march, interspersed with passages of Romantic lyricism. The third movement is a primal dance once again with a militaristic edge, led by the percussion, both the battery and the mallets. Marked ‘Solemn’, the fourth movement begins like a hymn, with a chorale in the horns and low brass and continues to explore the same emotional territory throughout the movement. The fifth is a continuation and resolution of the ominous music first heard in the earlier movements.
