Jeffrey A. Young
Symphony No. 3 (2023)
I. Maestoso
II. Adagio
III. Presto
IV. Dance
This, my third symphony, has no particular program or story; at least one that can be described in words. It opens with a ceremonial march marked ‘Maestoso’ and is characterized by its sense of fanfare, particularly in the brass voices. As is customary in the Classical model of the Symphony, the second movement is a slow movement distinguished by its chromatic harmonies and lyrical lines. The third movement is reminiscent of a Scherzo, except that it does not begin in triple meter. However, the parts not in triple meter are jocular in nature, thereby meeting the stylistic requirement. The fourth movement marked ‘Dance’ is precisely that.
