This symphony is characterized by driving rhythms, exotic modes and bold brass lines. The symphony opens with a large brass moderato fanfare, which is followed by a slinky melody derived from the modes of the harmonic minor scale. The second movement is a placidly lyric piece, featuring soft textures, and warm colors. Driving pulsating rhythms characterize the third movement and the fourth movement is characterized by awkward but groovy driving rhythms.
