Symphony No. 13 is a rollicking entry, featuring motor rhythms as well as long lyrical passages. The opening is a playful tune, interpolated with a motor rhythm in the timpani, and the second movement begins with a mournful saxophone quartet. The dissonance of the third movement is a nice contrast to the playfulness of the first, and the fourth movement is majestic closing march featuring large brass sections with woodwind flourishes.
