The Scherzo for Wind Ensemble is a Scherzo in the sense that Beethoven used the term; it is in fast triple meter and its character is sardonic. The Scherzo, written 3/4 throughout, organizes itself into super meters varying in length, effectively creating a multi-meter feeling throughout. The work achieves its sardonic character through the employment of hockets, quick turns of melody, and fast moving harmonies.
