Ciudad de los Cuchillos: Tres Tangos explores three distinct eras of the tango tradition, each movement revealing a different facet of the genre’s evolution.
The first movement, Tango Canyengue, looks back to tango’s early street origins with grounded rhythms, gritty articulation, and the unmistakable sway of the habanera. Its raw energy reflects the music’s beginnings in the barrios of Buenos Aires.
The second movement, Tango de Salón, shifts into the elegance of the dance‑hall era. Long, lyrical lines and warm harmonies evoke the polished style of the Golden Age, where tango became refined, graceful, and deeply expressive.
The final movement, Tango Nuevo, propels the suite into the modern world. Sharp accents, driving ostinatos, and bold harmonic colors echo the innovations that reshaped tango in the late 20th century, culminating in a vibrant, contemporary finale.
Together, these movements form a compact journey through more than a century of musical transformation — three faces of a tradition that continues to reinvent itself while remaining unmistakably tango.
