This symphony begins inauspiciously, with a lyrical melody accompanied by the entire woodwind chorus. Interjections of pulsing mallet and low brass interject throughout creating a unique and interesting texture. A kind of Italianate pastoral second movement is followed by solemn third movement. The Symphony concludes with a gigue.
