Symphony No. 17 features metric modulations, dueling counterpoint, and a driving rhythmic language. It opens with a Maestoso statement which is soon contrasted with a lovely lyrical section in the woodwinds. The Second Movement opens with a saxophone quartet, playing its theme in canon. As with the opening two movements the final two are replete with battling contrapuntal lines, and motor rhythms.
