After a strident horn call, the symphony moves into the familiar realm of a Classical symphony. The second movement is constructed with a plaintive melody opening in the horns and continuing in the winds. The strident nature of the symphony continues in the third movement and the fourth movement opens with a motive similar to the English horn solo in Rodrigo’s Adagio for Winds.
